Thanks - yes Dan and I correspond. Spectacular builder. The circumstances of the DIIIa loss were really unfortunate. I think there are some pics of it on Glenn Torrences website. It looked great in lozenge fabric.

RE: Pfalz DIII resources -- Photos, Drawings, Plans, etc.
The plan is slowly coming together in my mind. After spending some more time going over all the drawings, and looking back on jtisch's Alb DIII build thread on the Aerodrome Forum, I've decided that I'll build a frame structure at the front to tie the wings, engine and landing gear together. Then stack the rear formers on a tube, add the stringers, remove the tube, open up the centers of the formers and skin it. I think that makes it a semi monocoque (should learn to spell that?) structure. Photos of the process are on the Forums flying models listing under, DJ's 1/4 scale Albatros DIII by jtisch posts #33 and #35 show what I was trying to describe. I need to get copies made of the Spievack drawings so I can cut em up and have them enlarged to 1/4 scale. Time to do all the things needing to be done isn't a problem as I wont have the SE 5a done till sometime in March and then there's the 1/3 Nie.28 c1 to do. Happy landings, Doc

Dan's plane is also shown at the Dawn Patrol website. If you haven't seen it, ask him to show you his DeHaveland Hornet Moth. What a beauty and interesting subject.

I just received an email from Alan Spievack's brother, Lee, informing me that Alan passed away on March 15th. He will be missed as a fine human being, a pioneering scale modeler, and our friend and cohort.
Thanks to Alan's plans of the DIII this unique aircraft will live on for future generations of modelers both directly in the case of those building from his plans, and indirectly through those who use his plans as a starting point in their own quest for the "perfect Pfalz."
I raise a virtual glass in his honor!

Hi all,
So sorry to hear this news. Ironically I was thinking of Alan as I recently bought a copy of Flying Models magazine on ebay for a F.F. SE5a plan. To my pleasant surprise, his article on the Dewoitine D-510 was included as well (FM, Feb. 1976).
His Pfalz will always be one of my all-time favorite models.
My sincere condolences go out to Alan's friends and family.

Tom,
Thanks for uploading that photo of Alan.
It's really gut wrenching to hear the news. So much given to the community over the years and so much lost with his passing.

This is indeed sad information! Alan was a true gentleman and an inspiration for us all. I need to re-read his Pfalz article in Flying Models again, for the elevendyith time!
We are loosing some of the true pioneers in this hobby at an alarming rate!

Thanx, Tom, I see the Rudder/Fin hinge, but i don't see tailplane detail here. What i think i remember seeing is the hinge is a piece that mounts on the stab, and extends into the elevator, sort of like a Robart pin, but it sits on the spar.

Hi,
Okay...I'll keep my eyes peeled. Figure 7 looks like it shows a hint at the Elevator hinge at the control horn, but I'll try to see if I can come up with something better.
Best regards,
Tom

Tom,
The article on Alan's regenerative research is fascinating. I've very grateful to you for sharing a little more insight on Alan's life and impact he's had for us all.

Thanx again, Tom. I had seen that drawing, but was wondering what that hinge thing looked like.......wanted to improve on the strap & dowel hinge on Alan's plans.
Hope to bring my Pfalz to Rhinebeck in Sept.....maybe see you there.

I know this is a DIII thread, but thought all you Pfalzianados would like to know I have a Pfalz DXV well underway. I've put a lot more time into the plans on this model (unlike the DIIIa). After the maiden (and assuming it flies) I'll send electronic file of the plans to anyone interested.

Hi Seth,
Count me in. I presume you've been building the plans in CAD (please say yes!)
My ability to spend any time with the hobby has been severely crippled with business demands. Haven't even been able to fly the electric foamies much less build. Regardless, I know a great opportunity when I see it, and don't want to miss out on getting a hold of the plans!

Hi Erich,
I know the feeling when life crowds out a great hobby[&o] Yes they're drawn 2D in CADKEY. I can export DWG, DXF and PDF. Fuselage is 1/2 built so it will probably be early next year before she flies. Will keep you posted.
