Hey thanks everyone! Here are a few pictures I grabbed from the video - sorry they're a bit fuzzy. They look kind of like gun camera shots!

Mode One,
I can't say I had enough experience with non-scale bi-planes to know the answer to your question about the size of the wheels. The method I used seemed to work well with scale models . The one time it didn't was with a giant scale Ryan PT-20 which was terribly nose heavy by my method. When I used the CG from the real plane (38% of the cord, which I thought would be terribly off) it worked fine., But that was a mono-plane.
I have no areodynamics behind my method. Just more trial and failure stuff

Seth
Thanks for the pictures. What a thrill. We (I) need more photos and a follow-up on engine performance after adjustments etc.
Keep the data coming I can't get enough
Thanks what a triumph!!!

Alan, The article is in the May 2007 (#196) issue of WW1 Aero, The Journal of the Early Aeroplane. The article is written by Tom Polapink, Ross Moorhouse and T.S Tavares (I think). It has a photo of you from your article and two of Seth's airplane. I have just re-subcribed to WW1 Aero after a hiatus of probably more the 20 years and I believe the only way to get a copy is to be a subscriber. Back issues may be available. The website is: www.ww1aero.org

FA, those look like the Spievack plans (which I'm sure Alan will confirm). We discussed the plusses and minuses of differnt plans on p.4 of this thread. In my opinion Alan's plans are more scale and more detailed than the Polapick plans available through AZM. I have both.

Thanks Abu and Fokker Ace,
Yes those are my plans which were oferred for years by Flying Models.
Don McGovern once told me they had sold over 700 sets, so I guess there are alot of them around. I even have a set.
Doug Allred was a flying friend and fellow club member back in the 70; and early 80's. Haven't heard from him in years and not sure he's still alive. He was a draftsman and took my pencil plans and drawings and made them professional.
One of the interesting traditions of draftsmen is that if they take someone's work and formalize them they get to call themselves the "designer". But I had no fight with Doug. He did a great job and we spent a lot of hours working over the project. I also still have my original plans and drawing from which I built the plane. I'm a pack rat.
The asking price is cheap since at one point FM Plans Service was asking 70 bucks.
best

Hi Guys,
Took a bit of figuring but I finally got some video of the maiden flight onto youtube. The following link should play it (you might have to paste into your browser). I'm the guy in the red shirt. Winds were light and variable with a slight cross. You'll notice distinct pull to left on take off after a few ground loops trying to get her straight. Plane showed huge adverse yaw until which responded very well to rudder coordination. I've started making a steel backing plate for the spinner to replace the aluminum one to increase nose weight. Hopefully more news in the weeks to come.

Come on now, whose building a Pfalz next??

I'm not sure who was more excited, you or the camera operator!!!

Looks great in the air. I could just feel the tension on the take-off. phewww! Nice one-wheeled landing too.

Sounds as if you've got a great group of fellow flyers too.

.................

So Seth, this is really a capstone achievement here; who's going to attempt to follow in your footsteps? :-)

Hmmm...tough act to follow! I think I'll just wait a decade or two until people have forgotten all about it.

Ya Wohl, Baron von Sethausen returns safely from der Western Front.

Great job, and I agree. who wants to be second place to the Ritmeister? Thanks Seth, now if we can find a camerman as good as the modeler we'll also get an Academy Award.
Seth it looks like you have plenty of power, once the trim is worked out you'll have years of fun from that plane,
Thanks for let us all be included.
Publish those plans please

Alan, that's just too funny! Yes the photography is a little rough but I know I'm no better so I can't complain (actually after the flight I learned there's a club member whose a professional videographer. I'll know who to hand the camera to next time so Bob can watch the flight rather than tape it. If you're out there Bob, thanks!) I take my hat off to Mercer County RC - they're a great supportive group of skilled builders and flyers - I couldn't ask for more support.

Also - I know there is a master modeler out there whose told me he's pretty far along with a DXII. Love to see some pictures Dan!

Sorry not much news on the Pfalz - I've been rushing to finish my J10. But I did make nose weights. Rather than swinging a steel spinner back plate, I made an insert for the nose ring, and a extra-thick steel prop washer. The steel ring is screwed to hardwood dowls set into the cowl. I weight has primer on it because I used mild steel instead of stainless. Total addition is 1 lb 14 oz. which will pull the cg forward about 7% to 28% mean chord. Hope to be flying again in a week or two.

Here's a documentation question: Besides WWI Aero #139 and Herris' book, anyone know of any other sources of documentation for the Pfalz DR.I? (Thinking about a new project, somewhat more "stand-off" scale than the DIII.a.)

Clever, clever! I look forward to a new (and better ) set of glamour and flying shots. Your model is spectacular and deserves more photographic attention!

RE: the Pfalz Dr.I.
You could shoot Dave Cowell at DPC Models.....he's got a kit for a rubber powered one.....must have had some references.

[they're neat kits, too boot!]

Hi Seth,
The Pfalz Triplane would make a great model! Here's a picture of one that was built by Carl Collins many years ago. It appeared at Rhinebeck back in 1972 (my dad snapped the picture). I don't know what he used for reference, but would assume he drew his own plans.

I don't know if it ever flew, or what became of it...looks like he did a very nice job on it though.
Do you remember seeing this one Alan?

Best regards,
Tom Polapink

Wow, great looking tripe! It's just one more reminder that there really isn't anything new under the sun in WWI scale modeling. All one can do it build bigger or better -- and in some cases better doesn't even seem like an option.
