Welcome to Club SAITO !
Raulph that is the best decoti pic i have ever seen. Cool
so i know i come and go here but work has been fruitful and i have been blessed.
So anyway I managed to get a Saito.65 off eBay a while back and it was missing the intake and carb so I found that i had a spar .80 intake and carb and with a little reaming i now have a Saito.65 that will turn a 13X6 at 11200RPM’s.
I think I might have a race engine for a good 50 size P51.

Saito ant no tomato !!
Dave the devil got me giving you a ribbing about the harley,so here's the only lime green colour i can come up with. How's the new red toyota? going.Thinking about trading in the old toyota camry v6 wagon for a new hyundai i30,what the heck you only live once.
I'm no mechanic and jim has bought up the idea of opening up the exhaust port on a small saito single,is it worth it?

Thanks Pete, Geri's new car is a 2018 Chevy Cruze, it's the first car, (or truck) that I've owned that climbs all the mountains on I 68 in western Md. and W.Va and stays in over drive/6th gear. It climbs them effortlessly at 2,050 rpm and on a 100 degree day. Not bad for an 85.5 cubic inch turbo charged engine with 179 foot pounds torque at 2,000 rpm. It turns 2,050 rpm at 70 mph. On the trip to Mass. we got 41.2 mph and it's quiet and very comfortable.
That green is very close to my bike's Light Green Envy, is that gold metal flake based?
All the .65's I've owned have turned 13 x 6's at about 9,900 on 10% or 15% Wildcat of various lube blends. I haven't fooled with Saito exhausts other than to use Turbo Headers on some of them. Gary made me two adapters to put Turbo Headers on a Saito FA 40-a.

Yeah the .65 that i rebuilt turns a 13-6 at 9900 thats pretty cool I was just surprised at how many RPM’s I gained by putting a Saito 80 carb and intake on it.
So i hope this winter i can get one of the P51’s from world models. They have a couple like Dago red and Voodoo. Sounds like fun to me.

Saito FA 40-a's and my Swak
Here my two FA 40-a's with Turbo headers mounted.
Interestingly I took a peak inside the back plates on them, the earlier one with a B on the right mounting lug has a shielded rear bearing, the later with a C on the lug has an open non shielded bearing. Well.

any hoo, the exhaust has to be forced to flow around that 90% edge, so taking a stone and removing the sharp edge of the bevel (on the valve side) will help flow the exhaust faster,,, but of course the question is how much will the gain in RPM be ?,, AND of course like on any engine you will may loose some low RPM power, and your Idle may have to be raised some,,
NOW, something I have found on the 100 that you have to question about the 65, is, the 100 Header's ID is larger than the Exhaust Port's ID, so simply Drill out or Milling out the port's ID to match the Header's ID will be simple and help flow more exhaust,, but the cylinder and valves need to be removed before doing so
you will have to look at the 65 to see if these modifications can be done..
BTW, I just got up and check my 100T and it too has the 90% edge, but I'm not going to mess with that littler baby,, no way, no how
Jim
I got me some Saito

,
it is very interesting to see such a big gain with just swapping the carb and manifold, I'm betting your engine will now benefit from an exhaust port job.. but still, I would use more pitch to get the RPM down a bit, because in the air you will be up a round 11500, maybe even more ?

Dave that chevy cruze looks very slippery, nice shape too.I'm tossing up between a new hyundai i30 and an older model toyota lexus is250,like chalk and cheese.
Jim when you strip the fa100 or 115 can you post a close up pic of the exhaust port.
ps that plane jane green met basecoat is overlaid with two coats of gold candy,it's what makes the silver metallic glow gold.Much like when you spray black candy over metallic silver flakes,it makes the silver flake go a rich bronze colour, just like the muffler on your saito goes a nice golden brown when you run a bit of castor.

My experience with painting bikes is limited to buying old Harley's when I was a kid, 13 until 20 and disassembling them, sand them down some, hit them with gray primer and then finish them in Farmall Red tractor paint with an International Harvester rattle can. These bikes ranged from 1954 to 1961 mostly 165 ST's. Then I bought a brand new 1962 Pacer in Hi Fi red and didn't fix bikes up anymore. Now my painting is limited to Saitos now and then.
I also fixed up a factory 19?? Whizzer motor bike in the midst of all that.
The Cruze is slick, I'm sure that's part of the reason it is so quiet.
I too would like to see the 100 port feature Jim is discussing. I will look at my own too.

OKC,
Here is a pic of the latest of many Kadets. The last of my two strokes too!
I have another one on the build table right now. It is on the back burner while I deck out the 110 Rascal.

Painting motorcycles? By the time I painted my first motorcycle, I had already painted several cars. The first car was a 1931 Ford Model A Tudor Sedan. It had been sitting in a neighbors back yard for several years after being sideswiped. I bought it at age 14 or 15 with paper route money. My buddy and I pulled out the rear quarter, running board apron and fender. His dad let us paint it in his garage. Red Rust Oleum Alkyd Enamel paint. It was several cars later that I painted the 1969 BSA Rocket Three after a total tear down , rebuilding the engine and suspension. That one had a black acrylic enamel frame and the body work was Kandy Kolor Candy Apple Red over silver base with clear lacquer top. Wild Bill Betz from Triumph Detroit did the pinstriping. He was the ONLY local who would pinstripe using lacquer paint.
He is also the fellow who originated that swept paint accent used on later model Triumph tanks by factory .
My hat is off to people who love to paint! I only did it because I couldn't afford a pro! They do earn their pay!
The metal work however turned out to be my living.I never thought I would wind up hand hammering cars out of sheet metal for most of my working life . Much less, actually enjoying it

Pete, my 100 is all back together.. but you could just remove your header on your engines and see what I am talking about,, my headers are not mounted, so I will try to get a good photo for you, but I can't say how well it will come out being that the 90% Edge is inside the port, I wont be able to get the photos until tomorrow around 4pm eastern time..
I never painted, but I have rebuilt a couple Chevy small blocks (L79 327 Vett engine I put in my 71 Nova back in 79 and a 400 HP 350 I put in my V-drive boat back in 97) and a Chevy 4.3 V6 to re sell, and a Buick odd firing 225 V6, the 225 I built back in 81 or 82 for my 1947 CJ2A , that 225 was such a sweetheart, she had a CompCam Cam for low end torque, stock 2 barrel carb w/headers, she would never miss a beat when turning only 300 RPM as she crawl up over a rock or up the side of a river bank while pushing a constant 40 pounds of oil pressure.. the wife's uncle didn't like it that I swapped out the old and sick 4 cylinder Flat Head for the 225 until he got to see just how the 225 really did do everything better than the Flat Head, never the less the Flat Head was a cool engine. tiers were not that big, 11.00X32" Armstrong TrueTracks.
I sure miss being way up on the mountain cowling around in that Willys in the middle of the blackest of nights in 20 degree weather, some real fun there it was !!
Jim
Saito, it's a real thing,,, man

Intake valve completely closed.
That exhaust port could be that size deliberately to prevent over scavenging during the overlap period. The overlap period serves, (when well designed) to start the intake charge moving toward the cylinder even before the piston starts downward on the intake stroke. The late intake valve closing allows intake charge momentum to continue filling the cylinder even as the piston is rising on the compression stroke.

Dave i think i'm going to be impracticable and buy a v6 2012 lexus is250,way to many electrical gizmo's and comfortable better than rolls royce leather seats which you can warm or cool to your hearts delight. If anything goes wrong with all that fancy gear i'll be on shank's pony for a while. It'll give me time to polish the car while it's not going anywhere.
Jim looking forward to some pics mate.I got careless with a small extra 300 with one of my fa82's in it and it flick rolled right, went in vertical and put a sharp crease a third of the way through the intake tube where it bends forward to go in the head, hard to say what caused.that sharp crease afterwards because there where bits scattered everywhere but i think it was the top bulkhead edge. After a new crankshaft was fitted i bench ran it with a new intake tube and then the restricted bent one,There was no difference in tuning or running peak rpm.

The Cruze also has heated seats, I haven't used that feature yet but Geri has. I have a good 82-A crankcase if anyone needs it. Dr. appointment this AM, another day wasted on BS, maybe tomorrow I can run the rebuilt 100 and a new 56.
