RE: 1/4 scale Gas Tunnel boat ... what to build?
Hi Guys
some awesome news. Yesterday we ran 70mm and 76mm carbon fiber props ,full size ,with our new batch of cables, without any regard for throttling off in turns etc. I had a SIG mounted on the leg(some extra power) and Tikie ran his Zenoah (Awesome boat). We left the Dam at 2pm without a broken cable. We will be at the dam on Saturday to run our new season boats and to prepare for the race in the States come March.
A word of warning. Do not run a motor without an efficient air box. I ran a new ZIG without a air box and the water spray being sucked into the carb actually damaged the piston on the carb inlet to a point of "NO compression". It seems that the cooling effect of the water on the side of the piston distorts the piston which causes excessive wear.
May you all have a great 2008 and we look forward to a great year of seeing the gas boats establish there class after all these years of R&D. well done to "ALL" who have added there bit to the equation.

Were you running the Lawless leg? If so, were you using the newer replacement two piece flex cable / prop shaft?? What kind of cable lube were you using? Are you using a remote oil holder? Just wondering since I'd like to keep a place on the stand this coming race

Hi OB
Yes it is the latest type Lawless set up. I have been working with Fred on this for some time now.We have found the set p to be critical with shaft lenghth etc, however Richard in the UK is having no problems. Lube is on placement high speed grease thereafter 50/50 gear box oil and STP no smoke.
If you are serious about been on the podium call Fred for some instant bolt on power as in a pipe purpose made for the out board.
Good luck with your race.
regards
Dominic and Lisa-Marie

Domic,
Thanks for the info. Fred and I email all the time. He stated boaters in UK and RSA were testing the new setup. I'll have to check wtih Fred to see if he'll have one at the 2008 Champs. At the moment, running the SPP. But yea, I'd like to take wood home again..
Me on the right..

Hi WildGas
happy to see that you have your boat( it looks great) and motor, I hope Fred was able to supply you with the pipe, if not ,please let me know. Are you going to be at the World Tunnel race. We are really looking forward to meeting eveyone there. I have a laser cut top plate that will save you the bother of cutting that square mounting plate to the profile of the engine case as well as a coil mount plate that will accomodate a kill switch. We have found that the motor is very vulnerable to water been sucked in through the carb intake which causes serious dammage to the piston on the intake side. It seems to have a water jet effect which cutts the piston as well as a coling effect which changes the milicular structure and softens it ,causing it to distort. I ran a SIKK for about 2 hours without a suitable intake box (none whatsoever) and the piston eventually had so little compresion that the carb was spitting fuel instead of sucking it into the crankcase. The best senario is to creat a box with the intake at the top ,as high off the water as possible. Running any form of spunge filter definitely holds the top RPM back. Have a great build and if your transom is 96mm wide i have a laser cut and drilled Stainless steel transom that will help you convert that wedge transom angle to vertical as well as endure the visciuos vibration from the motor (Its likr a badly tuned Harley)
All the best

RE: 1/4 scale Gas Tunnel boat ... what to build?
Well were racing.
Our club had our first meeting for 2008 and one of the new classes were a F1 Gas class.
And I must say after all the problems the guys have had with shafts breaking and water in the carbs, they raced like champions. We had 4 boats and in at least 2 of the heats we had all 4 racing. The other 2 we had 3 racing.
Yes taken mayby not as fast as the guys would like or are going to be but a race with no shaft breakages or motors full of water.
To the end of the day the wind picked up and had some spectacular flips.
Well done guys and next meeting will be even better.

RE: 1/4 scale Gas Tunnel boat ... what to build?
Des anyone among you gas OB'ers know where I can find a cover/ intake box to fit over the carb to prevent sucking in water? I've seen pix of various applications...but no one mentions where they got the cover..or if you just have to fabricate one.
( this thread is great for info from all over...keep the ideas comin'!!!) Go GAS OB!

Don't get the Snozller 2.. It's a waste of $$... Mine broke on the first run..
I took at Sullivan Slant 6oz fuel tank, cut the fuel neck side off at a slant and then drilled holes for the mount screws thru both sides. Then a hole was cut for the intake. Tape off the two holes on the exterior side of the tank..
Works wonders.
