Default DH Gypsy Moth (G. Whitehead plan)

I was looking for a quick and relatively simple sport scale scratch build project for my old but charming OS .26FS and came across this plan ( https://outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=5210 ).

Since I’ve built several of Gordon’s plans and all flew great, I thought I’d give this one a go.

I printed the plan on several ordinary sheets and taped them together, and also found enough balsa in my box of scraps.

Not quite finished yet, but getting there.

The only change I did was to design bolt on wing fixing in lieu of the rubber bands shown on the plan.

Thanks Chad, nothing beats making a model from a plan, basic tools, and a few bits of wood

I scratch built a 1/4 scale

using OS GT-22 engine, flies great, could use more power but would probably rip the wings off original probably wasn't built for speed either. Can do loops, rolls, hammerheads.

a lot of wood and several hours wandering the hardware store for some of the fittings

1/6 aerodrome original in front, 1/4 scale scratch build in rear 1/6 is a "little" overpowered with an OS 55 on it

wings fold just like the real thing, makes transport and set up super easy, 6 screws,
DH-60 moth from blown up aerodrome models plans a few years back, great flier

Some progress, I got the model covered.
Used heavy weight silkspan and dope.
It’s an old school type of model, would be unthinkable to use anything more modern!

All done, just need to install the RC equipment.

All flying and landing wires from elastic thread.

Brushed on household PU paint.

All registration letters are brushed on.

Thanks!

The current weight as pictured is exactly 2 Lb. so with the modern rc equipment the expected AUW should be lower than Gordon’s prototype at 55 oz, hence should fly well (like all of my previous Gordon Whitehead models).
